Private Medical Insurance (PMI)

Medical insurance is used as a policy that covers you for any bills arising from medical treatment or from a hospital admission. As with all policies, this can vary per insurance provider, but some of the benefits are:

  • Extensive cover for eligible in-patient, out-patient and day-patient treatments
  • Cover for psychiatric treatment
  • Cover for complimentary medicine for out-patients
  • Access to a choice of local or national hospitals

As there is such a wide range of cover available there is usually a policy to suit any budget. You can cover yourself, your partner and your family and like most insurances, the more excess you are willing to pay, the lower your monthly premiums will become.

Can I take medical insurance out just for myself now, and add my family at a later date?

Absolutely – you are able to apply to add your partner / spouse and your children at any time throughout the policy. They would be medically underwritten in the same way as you were when you applied for your policy.

You have mentioned in-patient and out-patient, but what does this cover mean?

The easiest way to explain this is to consider what might be covered under each heading:

In-patient

  • Hospital Charges.
  • Consultant’s fees.
  • Diagnostic Tests.
  • Cancer Treatment.
  • Psychiatric Treatment.
Out-patient

  • Consultant consultations.
  • Physiotherapy.
  • Diagnostic Tests.
  • Psychiatric Treatment.
  • Cancer Treatment.

Other benefits may include – Nursing at home, domestic help, parent accommodation when accompanying a child, complimentary medicines, a private ambulance and medical health assessments.
